Being fitness enthusiasts ourselves, we were thrilled when Athleisure became a trend. Even better? It didn’t end up being just a trend – it became a lifestyle. Now, it’s hard to imagine a world without stylish workout clothes that can take you from the gym to lunch and beyond. But just five or so years ago, it was nearly impossible to find cute clothes to hit the gym in (especially ones you’d want to wear when you’re not getting your sweat on).
In the mean time, popular athletic brands have stepped up their fashion game while other newcomers have made a name for themselves. This is great news for us who love to be comfortable and stylish all day everyday, but navigating the Athleisure market can be overwhelming. Although we love our not-new-but-totally-noteworthy OG brands like Nike, Lululemon, Athleta and Outdoor Voices, we wanted to share some other brands that you may not have heard of yet. We have to teach you something here on Between The Lines, right? So here’s our top ten favorite Athleisure brands you’ll want to live in.
If you’re looking for an effortlessly cool Athleisure brand, Alala will be your go-to. Simple silhouettes with a twist in a color or pattern here and there makes this brand super easy to wear. It’s the perfect example of fashion meets function (at least when it comes to activewear). We also love that you can customize your own leggings on their website! Because who doesn’t love anything custom? 🙂
Of course we’re partial to yoga-focused brands, however Alo Yoga really knows what they’re doing when it comes to fabric. If you’ve ever done yoga in a pair of their leggings, you’ll never want to go back to any other pair. Their fabrics truly move with you. No tugging or pulling when you adjust to different poses – these leggings feel like they are a part of you (without being super thin or see-through like some other brands).
Is it just us or do you secretly wish you were a ballerina in a past life? If you feel the same way, then you’re going to love Live The Process. What’s great about their style is that it’s ballet-inspired but not super literal (so if tutus aren’t you’re thing, don’t worry – there’s none here). The pieces are simple, feminine and luxe. Basically a modern version of Jenna Dewan’s style in Step Up (great movie, BTW). Added bonus? Live the Process ethically produces their clothes in America and they’re all made by women! #GirlPower
We’re suckers for nostalgia, which P.E. Nation truly nails by making phys-ed inspired clothes. Their sort-of streetwear meets activewear vibe is more for the tomboy at heart. They’ve created more than just an activewear brand, but a true lifestyle brand. Just look at their Instagram – those women look pretty bad ass (and we are all about bad ass women). Going along with the lifestyle brand that we totally buy into, P.E. Nation makes more than just sports bras and leggings – they have sunglasses, coats, and even denim.
The founders of Varley split their time between London and LA, which is apparent in their designs. With a casual yet sophisticated aesthetic, the pieces have minimalist silhouettes with surprising details. For example, a sweatshirt with buttons down the side or leggings with perforated mesh. We appreciate attention to detail and Varley definitely nails it.
We are especially partial to Avocado, as we carry the Line at The Space Between (and there’s a reason for that). Of course the clothes are stylish and we want to wear them all the time (and we do!) but there’s much more to the brand. They actually have a patented waistband that makes their leggings extremely flattering. Plus, they use a unique fabric that’s super soft and even has UV protection, which is great for those who love to exercise outdoors. They also have an AvoMom line for those who are expecting!
Although we’re in Chicago, people tend to define their style as more NY or more LA. So if you tend to feel those West Coast vibes, then you’re in luck…because that’s what exactly Electric & Rose is all about. With stylish loungewear, cozy basics and a lot of tie dye, you’ll feel like you’re right at Venice Beach (which is the idea, considering Electric & Rose is named after two iconic streets in the neighborhood).
We’re just going to come right out and say it – Australians do it better. And The Upside is just one of many examples. With Aussie swimwear brands being at the top of our list (think Zimmermann, Bamba, Triangl), it makes sense that they’d kill it in the activewear department as well. The Upside has a sleek aesthetic with fun prints (and yes, they make swimwear too!) We are partial to their printed sets but really…it’s all good!
Twenty Montreal is probably the only brand here that is so stylish, we almost don’t want to wear it to the gym (but like many brands featured today, Twenty Montreal makes more than just leggings and sports bras). Originally known for their knitwear, Twenty Montreal makes everything from dresses and skirts to bike shorts and tanks. Each piece has an edgy sophistication that gives it a true fashion feel.
Just like in our professional life or our social life, we all have our own styles. If you’re not one for crazy prints or silhouettes, Girlfriend Collective is going to be your jam. With simple styles but in every color you can imagine, Girlfriend’s pieces are affordable, flattering and comfortable. Although we love the clothes, we love the sustainability aspect even more. Their leggings are made from recycled water bottles (you can even recycle your own Girlfriend leggings to get $15 towards a future purchase) and the brand is transparent with how and where their clothes are made (you can learn more here).
If you’re looking for even more Athleisure inspo, we love shopping on Bandier or Carbon38 as they have a variety of brands and price points (so there’s something for everyone!) Let us know your favorite fashionable Athleisure brands in the comments.
